Honey Super Deluxe — Hive Set

Select either Italian or Texan genetics for your colony and choose your preferred hive coating: Traditional White Painted or Natural Wax Dipped

This set includes a 5-frame nucleus colony installed into a complete 10-frame Langstroth style deep brood box, plus one medium honey super for expansion and honey storage.

The colony includes a young mated laying queen, brood in multiple stages, and food stores from the parent hive.

Honey Super Deluxe Set-up

The deep brood box contains:

  • 5 frames of bees (the nuc)
  • 3 new wood frames with waxed Rite-Cell® foundation
  • One 1.5-gallon internal frame feeder

In addition, this set includes:

  • One 6 5/8" Medium Hive Body (Honey Super)
  • 10 assembled medium frames with waxed foundation

See the Specifications section below for the complete itemized component list.

Designed for Growth

The included honey super provides expansion space during active growth periods and nectar flow. In many cases, it is ready to add within the first 1–3 weeks, depending on weather, forage conditions, and feeding practices.

Ready for Immediate Setup

All components arrive fully assembled and prepared for transport. Upon arrival at your apiary, place the hive on your stand and open the entrance. There is no required waiting period.

Bees are live livestock. Colony development varies with weather, forage conditions, and management practices.

Seasonal Notes

Limited Availability

As with most things ag related, many things in beekeeping are dependent on seasons, so not everything is available at all times.

Please Note: Our Texan line of bees are seasonal, not available until the local prime mating season each year. We begin taking orders for mid to late spring Texan Bee Pickup Dates in the fall.

Picking Up Orders — With or Without Bees

We offer convenient “curbside” pickup for customers on the go with minimal delays. For those who would like a closer look, we can open the hives and show you the bees and queens on any available Pick Up Date.

When placing your order, you will select from multiple pickup dates. Hive purchase options are available with or without our popular Basic Beekeeping Class.

Appointments are required for all pickups.

Below you will find links addressing some of the most common questions we receive regarding pickup procedures.

For complete details, please review our Order Pickup Instructions before placing your order.

Transporting

Transport & Pickup

Honey bees, like most other livestock, require attention to the details to keep them safe and healthy. Such as maintaining proper temperatures and ventilation. Therefore, timely pickup and proper handling is recommended.

  • Provide adequate ventilation during transport
  • Avoid leaving bees unattended in hot vehicles

Failure to follow pickup instructions, particularly in hot weather, may result in loss of bees. (see Pickup notes below)

We have a dedicated section explaining how to safely move your bees, get them properly set up, and transport them in different types of weather.

It's always beneficial to know before you get started.

Purpose:

  • Live animal handling
  • Pickup requirements
  • Temperature / timing expectations

Visit the Transporting Bees section for more information.

Help and FAQs

Transport & Common Questions

Q: Is the queen marked?
No, unless otherwise noted on the order page, queens are not normally marked. Occasionally you may receive a marked queen, but this is not standard practice. We have a Help page that offers instructions for Marking Queens.
Q: Is the queen caged?
No, queens are not normally caged.
For special situations, such as long-distance transport or unusually rough travel conditions, we can provide a colony with a caged queen upon request. If caged, the queen will be installed with a time-release candy plug, so manual release is not normally required.
Q: Should I feed the bees when I get them home?
Yes. Providing one gallon of 1:1 sugar syrup (one part sugar to one part water) will help them begin establishing quickly.
Continue checking weekly and feed as needed, depending on nectar flow and colony development.
Q: (I bought a Nuc) How long do I have to wait to put the nuc into my hive body?
The bees are ready for the transfer as soon as you get them to their new location. The ProNuc (plastic tote) is a temporary transport box designed to be closed and move bees from one location to another with ventilation. Nucs are ready to be installed in the new hive the same day.
Allowing the bees to settle for around 20 minutes then applying a small amount of cool smoke to the bees will make the process easier.
